Rapier Combat
Why I Fight
Rapier was the first SCA combat form that I took up. Since when I was young the concept of wielding
a sword has been interesting to me but until I started SCA rapier I had never actually had
the opportunity to do so. Now I do and it is fun. A lot of it I was naturally okay at
and since then I have learnt some tricks.
What I enjoy about rapier is being able to wield real weapons and study relatively closely how they were used. It is more controlled that armoured combat so sometimes it is more work as I am unlikely to hit too hard in armoured combat at present, but that can't be said for rapier where hard metal is... hard. I look forward to the new Cut and Thrust rules and experimenting with those. I have an interest in trying out some of George Silver's ideas for that as they seem highly applicable - at least as one form of Cut and Thrust.
I have purchased a copy of the Art Of Dueling - Salvitor Fabris' rapier fencing treatise of 1606 - by Tommaso Leoni. This is currently informing our rapier practicing as we're trying to try out the system and see if we can master it. It is very early days but we hope to have some success with the ideas.
What I Fight
The only sword forms that I haven't done much of thus far is sword and cloak and case of rapiers.
I particularly like sword and dagger but I think my early fighting with it has been
at the expense of my single rapier skills - which are progressing more now I think.
Videos
I'd like to see some rapier videos up here in the future. Thus far we haven't videoed any
of our rapier combat which is something that should change as I don't think it is that
bad.
My Rapier Memory Dump / Todo List
I have legal armour however my main aim for rapier moving forward is to modify that to
be more in the style of my personae.
| Maintain rapiers! | Clean, clean, clean :) |
| Cloak | Make one to practice with |
| Fighting Look | Modify my current gear to make me look more in personae |
